Easily identify items that are not displayed in your layout without losing critical attribute information. When text or links are hidden as a result of a condition being turned off, a new HT indicator symbol appears in the Links panel.

Create text variables to simplify and automate the use of repeating elements such as headers, footers, product names, and date stamps. Base a variable on a document value such as page count, a system value such as today’s date and time, or custom text that you enter, and modify it at any time to update all instances of the variable in a document.

Accelerate the entry of boilerplate text and other frequently used words and phrases by typing any short combination of letters you choose.
Advanced bullets and numbering

Make quick work of lists by using styles to apply bullets or sequence numbers to text. Import bullets or numbering from Microsoft Word documents, and create figure or hierarchical numbering.
Footnote support

Create or import footnotes easily, and format their numbering and layout. When editing changes a story’s text flow, the related footnotes will reposition automatically to the correct column or page.

Style groups

Organize styles into groups in the Styles panel to shorten style lists and keep related styles together without creating awkward naming conventions. Expand or collapse style groups to view the styles most relevant to the task at hand.
Selective style import

Selectively choose which paragraph and character styles to import from other documents, and easily specify how InCopy CS4 handles style name conflicts.
GREP support for character styles new

Apply character styles to text using a GREP expression to find instances of a character or string of characters that occur in a specific context. Quickly apply your style to just those characters.
Nested styles enhanced

Use nested styles to dynamically apply complex character formatting to ranges of text within a paragraph. And now, apply nested styles through the end of a line for even greater flexibility. Formatting remains unchanged when text is edited.
Nested style loopings

Set up two or more nested styles to work together, one taking over where the previous one ends. For paragraphs with repetitive and predictable formatting, loop back to the first style in the sequence.

Power zoom enhanced

Use the Hand tool in patient mode to zoom out by holding down your mouse button. Continue to hold and you can move the zoom-area indicator across pages. Release and the view returns to your original zoom level in your new location. Change the zoom percentage with the up and down arrows.

Change the sequence of stories in Story View or Galley View so you can work on them in the order you prefer.

Use the newly redesigned, customizable Links panel to find, sort, manage, and organize all placed files in your InCopy CS4 documents and assignments. Click thumbnail images of files to view detailed information such as date created, date modified, and who edited last.

Quickly replace low-resolution placeholder images with high-resolution images based on filename — file extensions are ignored. Simply relink to a new folder.
